On September 1, 2013 HB 1951, Licensing of Telecommunicators became law.  In 2014, regional Police Chiefs and Sheriffs reached out to NCTCOG 9-1-1 to explore the feasibility of a Regional Telecommunicator Academy (RTA), to help PSAPs meet state mandates.  The RTA alows agencies to provide training upfront utilizing industry best practices, TCOLE approved curriculum, and state recognized award winning instructor team.

The RTA offers a multi-week academy and provides a level of excellence across the region minimizing the time it takes a new career telecommunicator to be a full partner in public safety.  The 4-week, 160-hour academy curriculum includes:

  • TCOLE Rules and Regulations
  • Basic Telecommunicator Certification Course
  • Crisis Communications
  • TDD/TTY
  • NCIC/TCIC
  • TLETS/Nlets
  • Fire Dispatch
  • National Center for Missing and Exploited Children
  • State Licensing Exam Review

Working with the RTA Staff, PSAPs may add "frontloading" curriculum such as agency specific testing of material, agency policy and procedures, signal and dispositon codes, agency geography, and/or continuing education (FEMA, TERT, and MyTCOLE) to name a few.
